Introduction
- Most people are slaves. Slaves to their impulses. Slaves to other's judgement. Slaves to their own emotions. However, by becoming discipline to yourself, others cannot control you. You became feared and respected. The Marchiavelli's Philosophy consists of five phases of discipline that with practice, you can become stronger as a human being.
The Five Phase of Discipline
Phase 1: The Discipline of Silence
Everyone sees what you appear to be. Few experience who you really are.
- An average person is loud. They announce goals, targets before they even begin putting their work into it. This is weak. It is like asking for permission.
- Marchiavelli does the opposite. He became a ghost. He doesn't announce goals. He simply sets it and works on it quietly. He lets the results speak for himself.
The most dangerous one in the room is the one who simply watches and listens quietly.
Phase 2: Emotional Alchemy
Take the lead weight of "I don't want to" and transmute into a gold of "I did it anyway"
- There is a misconception that discipline people don't feel any emotion. In reality, they felt it and overcome it. Take for example where we set our goal to exercise 30 minutes a day. It might went well on the first week. However, you feel the urge to quit when the second week arrives. This is normal.
- The main idea is to not let your emotions overrule your judgement. Feel your emotions, understand it and fight through it. Like a country leader, you listen to your people but shut them down when they overstepped their boundaries.
Phase 3: The weaponization of isolation
A wise prince should rely on what is in his own control not on what is in the control of others
- The idea is to face isolation. When you are in isolation, you embrace boredom, anxiety and your inner self. Overcome and understand those feelings leads to success in life. This will eventually make those around you uncomfortable because it displays their stagnation. But keep in mind that you are not doing this to hurt them. You're just raising your standards.
Phase 4: The Fear of Unpredictability
- When you are undisciplined, you are predictable. People know you're weak. They know that with enough pressure, they can force you to fold. Conversely, when you are discipline. People start afraid of you because you are no longer in control by them. In a way, this requires you to settle your emotions.
- At some point, discipline comes with negative emotions like tired, naked, and the urge to quit. What comes after is the feeling of wanting to be sympathize. Stop looking for sympathy or a pat on the back. Instead like in phase 2. Watch your feelings and overcome it. This is not about faking it. It is about framing it.
Phase 5: The standard of the absolute
When you hold yourself to the standard of excellence, you expose the mediocrity of everyone around you
- Luxury makes people weak. Discipline is an act of rebellion on comfort. Take reading a book for example. It is tiring, long and tedious at times. Watching Netflix or scrolling on Facebook seems more comfortable. However, this is where discipline fails and our brain is designed to live with comfort.
- The key point is to rebel against your own cravings of comfort. As that lowers the standards of your own discipline. This may be difficult at first but over time, it will become natural. At some point, you will feel, "let's skip today" or "five more minutes". Don't make exceptions there.
