Introduction
- I believe that we all have our own dreams, goals and ambitions. However, with today's current technology, we feel stuck. Not because of technicalities, but because of our focus has been diverted. Have you ever feel that you should do something today, but didn't do it. One main reason for that is because there is too much dopamine in our brain. Resetting it is a way to move forward
What is dopamine?
Dopamine can be understood as a feeling of wanting to pursue something over and over. Take Youtube as an example. Say you were watching of interesting series of videos. You finish the first video and tell yourself "I'll go to work after the second video". After the second video, you find the plot interesting, and tell yourself, "I'll work after I finished the third video". The process keeps repeating until you realize that the day was over. That is dopamine.
Today, there are many sources of dopamine. Aside from YouTube, all forms of social media also generate dopamine. Not to mention, most MMOs (Mass Multiplayer Online Games) also has it. This includes notifications in smart phone as well. The problem is with these activities being dominant in our lives today, our brain is flooded with dopamine.
What is dopamine detox
- Dopamine Detox is a method of resetting yourself from all the dopamine you have in your brain. The process carries on over a fixed period of time. This can be a day, week, month depending on the method you are using. Dopamine Detox helps you move your focus towards your own goals.
The Process
- For one week, do the following
- One hour a day of screen time on a phone - For work purposes, use laptops instead
- No Youtube
- No Films (Netflix, Adult Films)
- 10 minutes of meditation everyday
After the Process
Dopamine Detox is a step for resetting yourself. However, what happens after also matters. If you decide to go back to your old life, that the dopamine kicks in again which makes your work worthless. Changing your way of life is also just as important.
