You buy milk in little cartons. Perishable skills often require rapid, focused, special-purpose learning—a short course, a tutorial, a weekend-long, hands-on experiment. Not a deep mastery program but a working understanding that you can deploy now and update as things change.

There are resources. There is a lot of free, high-quality learning available online for almost any current skill. The real question is not can you find it. It is do you know what to learn. And do you defend the time to learn it.

Drink the milk often. In small quantities. And accept it will need refreshing.

The talented but not self-aware person is the one who spends his entire career being useful to everyone but himself. Someone good at their job and secretly miserable in their life. Who becomes capable without ever asking whether the direction of that capability is really who they are and what they need. Self-awareness is knowing you – your values, your limits, your energy patterns, what truly nourishes and what drains you silently. It is the art of selecting what is truly needed for you, not what is useful for others.

Without it you can be excellent at all that the world asks of you and still feel that something essential is missing. The thread back to yourself because something important is missing.

Water is not something you learn and then have. It is something you come back to, again and again, through your life. A couple of sips a day. A deeper drink When you have lost yourself In the work. A consistent practice of stopping and inquiring: Is this still good for me? What do I actually need at this moment? Am I on my way to something I want so much — or have I been so busy heading in a direction someone else laid out for me?

These questions are easy. They are also some of the most important questions a person can ask. And in a world moving faster than ever, more milk needed, more whiskey worthwhile, the people who forget to drink the water are the ones that can’t function at all.

Drink water daily. Even on the days when everything is going well. Especially on those days.
